Motorsport: Masons's three for three

Masterton driver Richard Mason made it a hat-trick of Rally Wairarapa wins yesterday in the third round of the New Zealand Rally Championship. Mason wiped any hint of competition with a clean-sweep of stage victories - pushing his overnight leading margin to a total of two minutes 05 seconds.

The Ford Fiesta of Auckland's Mark Tapper finished seventh overall, overtaking the previous leading two-wheel drive car of Kapiti's Aaron Cook (Honda Jazz), who finished eighth.

With 24 cars finishing the day, the major retirement was the Subaru Impreza of Emma Gilmour, who had gearbox problems.

Fastest road-legal BMW - yet!

Master tuner AC Schnitzer's Tension Street Version of BMW's 6 Series range is claimed to be the fastest road legal BMW in the world, clocking a top speed of close to 332 km/h.

The two-toned body sports a fearsome body kit, boasting the tightest rear skirt, chrome-rimmed air intakes on the bonnet, and air ducts integrated into the side skirts.

Depending on the base model, the Tension Street Version can be specified with AC Schnitzer's new 5.1-litre V8 as an alternative to the 5.0-litre V10 used in the M5 and M6. This unit produces 302 kW and 550 Nm of torque.

The engine howl is transmitted via a bespoke exhaust system constructed totally from stainless steel with chromed sports trim tailpipes gleaming from the rear.

Stopping power on M6 versions is provided by eight-piston calipers at the front and special pads for razor-sharp efficiency.

Randy Pobst: 鈥淓very Time I Come Out of The Toe of The Boot ...

And, every time I come out of the toe of the boot, memories just fill my head. I put together a good lap with a lot of help from [teammate] Jeff Altenburg. He towed me two-thirds the way down the track. I passed him coming out of the toe of the boot and just rammed it home. I really got to thank my personal sponsors Team Janika Racing, Weathertech, and APR Tuning for supporting me. "

Pobst finished second to Altenburg in the opening two rounds before a frustrating weekend at Lime Rock, where he qualified 12th and finished 11th.

A driver on a roll is Sofronas. After finishing a career-best second at Lime Rock, Sofronas qualified his No. 29 Global Motorsports Group/Techmark BMW 325Ci second—equaling his best effort—with a fast time of 2:05.970 (97.166 mph).

Crash.net's British GP Blog: Saturday.

Rizla Suzuki manager Paul Denning confirms that there will be a third GSV-R in MotoGP soon - but it could arrive in 2009 rather than next year. Spain's racing legend Jorge Martinez Aspar, who has achieved success as both a rider and a team owner, would expand from his operations in the 125 and 250cc classes and run the team.

"2009 could be easier in terms of logistics, but it's not necessarily the case that it won't happen until then," Denning said. "We would like to work with Aspar and the Suzuki factory really want to do this."

The delay, if there is one, would be caused by Suzuki's desire not to divert attention from their factory team when riders John Hopkins and Chris Vermeulen are now pushing the Ducati-Yamaha-Honda big three. They also want to ensure that they can give Aspar the backing that a team owner of his stature deserves.

Hamilton bags second GP victory

LEWIS HAMILTON claimed his second victory in a row as McLaren scored a third straight one-two finish of the season at the United States Grand Prix.

The 22-year-old British rookie continued his dream start to life in Formula One in Indianapolis, following on from his maiden victory in Canada last Sunday with another pole position, another win and a seventh straight podium finish from the first seven races of his Grand Prix career.

Hamilton opened a 10-point lead in the drivers' championship over McLaren team-mate Fernando Alonso, who was second.

The Ferraris of Felipe Massa and Kimi Raikkonen were back in business after a terrible race in Canada, finishing third and fourth.

Renault rookie Heikki Kovalainen was once again in the points in fifth.

Table Games Mythbusting

Tackling some common misconceptions about video poker last week has me in a myth-busting mood. Let's take on a few myths from a table games player perspective.

MYTH: The third baseman is a team player, and shouldn't take the dealer's bust card. A third baseman hitting 12 when the dealer has a 2, for example, is hurting the entire table.

FACT: A player hitting in that situation helps the rest of the table as often as he hurts it. Anyway, it's the best play for his hand. Hitting 12 against 2 is what he SHOULD do.

Wouldn't it be nice if we knew whether or not the next card in the deck would make the dealer's hand go bust? Problem is, we don't know what the dealer has face down, and we don't know what the next card is. Sitting at third base, I've drawn a 9 to my 12 for a 21, had the dealer turn up a 10-value card, then draw another 10 to bust.

Shoppers sleep on floor for Euro PS 3 launch

Yahoo: Computer games fans slept on the floor of a London store on Thursday to be among the first in Europe to buy Sony's PlayStation 3 console, despite concerns over its price.

A small group of shoppers snatched a few hours' rest in sleeping bags at the Virgin Megastore and enjoyed a sneak preview of a motor racing game before the machine goes on sale at midnight.

But there was little sign of the frenzy that surrounded its launch in the United States and Japan last year when thousands queued or camped outside stores.

Only a handful of gamers were queuing at major London stores early on Thursday. (…)

Motion-sensing comes to mobile phones

Mobility site: The same technology used in Nintendo's popular Wii video game console that lets you bowl strikes and hit tennis volleys like you're Venus Williams is also making its way into mobile handsets. Responding to a flick of the wrist or sweep of the arm, tiny sensors called accelerometers, which measure linear acceleration in the Wiimote game controller, translate motion into action on the screen.

When the technology is added to a cell phone, the handset's utility changes in several intriguing ways. It can, for example, function as a motion-sensing mouse that lets you browse the mobile Internet by tilting the device left, right, up or down. It even can allow you to monitor a fitness workout by measuring the number of steps you take, your speed and the calories burned.

Federal Jury Convicts A Kansas City Man For Committing $1.5 ...

Kansas City, MO (AHN) - A federal jury handed down a guilty verdict to a man for a series of fraudulent schemes that took $1.5 million from savings accounts Wednesday.

Jason E. Branch, Sr., 42, of Grandview, was found guilty of conspiracy to commit mail fraud and wire fraud, along with additional counts of mail fraud and money laundering.

Following the presentation of evidence, the jury in U.S. District Court in Kansas City deliberated three hours before returning the guilty verdict to U.S. District Judge Gary A. Fenner, ending a trial that began April 30, 2007.

From Jan. 1, 2003 to March 30, 2005, Branch convinced many of his victims to withdraw money from their retirement plans and savings accounts in order to invest in one of Branch's fraudulent schemes.

No need to rush into stock market

Would-be stock investors who see a buying opportunity amid the prevailing gloom and doom on the local political front could be disappointed, some analysts say.

Risk remains high and a wait-and-see approach to stocks is the most prudent course, says Adipong Puttarawigorm, the chief investment strategist at SCB Securities.

His view is that things will get worse before they get better so there's no rush to jump into the Stock Exchange of Thailand yet, he said at Money Expo 2007, which concluded yesterday.

''If it's not necessary, investors should avoid investing in stocks until the situation becomes much worse and everyone is desperate _ then there will be a buying opportunity. Right now, everything is so unclear and the temperature is rising,'' Mr Adipong said.

Beyond Brokerage Getting Some Help With the AMT

TAX TIME IS ALL over but the pouting. But for many members of the so-called mass affluent investing bracket, the April 17 deadline raised the specter of the alternative minimum tax, the formula that increasingly is an unwelcome fact of life in millions of moderately wealthy households.

It's unwelcome because it cuts out many of the itemized deductions that ease the pain of being in the top federal income tax bracket of 35%. While it's a complex formula, the most obvious difference in the way the AMT is calculated is that it eliminates the federal deduction for state and local income taxes, boosting one's overall tax liability. Since the feds require people to pay the highest calculated tax rate, and the numbers used to determine who's liable for the AMT haven't been changed in the 37 years since it was passed, it's easy to see why it's loathed by many.

No basis in latest oil price hike 鈥?IBON

The latest oil price increase was baseless as oil companies still owe the public P1.39 per liter in January and another P1.28 per liter in 2006. Militant think tank IBON Foundation said between December 2006 and January 2007, the foreign exchange rate improved from P49.43 per US dollar to P48.91 while the price of Dubai crude fell from $56.68 per barrel to $51.69. "These adjustments should have translated to a pump price reduction of P1.89 per liter but the oil firms lowered prices by only 50 centavos per liter in January this year for an overpricing of P1.39," it said. Also, it said that in 2006, oil companies were supposed to hike the pump price by only 34 centavos per liter based on the monthly movement of Dubai crude and forex but actual adjustments at gasoline stations hiked the price by P1.62 for an overpricing of P1.28.

Rising yuan marks key milestone

BEIJING, May 9 -- The central parity rate of the renminbi broke the 7.70 barrier against the U.S. dollar Tuesday as the U.S. Congress on Wednesday starts a hearing on China's alleged exchange rate manipulation.

The mid-point rate stood at 7.6951 yuan to one greenback Tuesday, the first trading day after the week-long May Day holiday, according to the Chinese Foreign Exchange Trading System.

It was a gain of 104 basis points from the reference rate of 7.7055 on the last trading day before the holiday and the highest since it was de-pegged from the U.S. dollar in July 2005.

The yuan hit a new high for the 27th time this year.

Although it breached the psychological barrier of 7.70, it only shows that the currency is strengthening vis a vis the US dollar and does not have any special significance, said Yan Qifa, an economist with the Export-Import Bank of China.

Couple accused of Dow Jones insider trading

NEW YORK 鈥?U.S. regulators accused Tuesday a husband and wife in Hong Kong of insider trading stemming from their purchases of Dow Jones & Co. Inc. shares prior to News Corp.'s $5 billion (U.S.) takeover bid.

The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission said Kan King Wong and Charlotte Ka On Wong Leung "engaged in widespread and unlawful trading activity" that put them in a position to make an estimated $8.1 million profit on Dow Jones shares.

The SEC and the New York state attorney general have been investigating unusual trading in Dow Jones' stock and options before the buyout offer was announced on May 1.

A civil complaint filed by the SEC in Manhattan federal court said the Hong Kong couple bought 415,000 shares of Dow Jones from April 13 to April 30 "while in possession of material, nonpublic information" regarding the impending News Corp.

New or used? Peace of mind is a crucial factor

It's hard to remember when there was a better time to consider a used car instead of a new one.

The record number of new cars and trucks sold in recent years -- fueled largely by extremely attractive rebates and low- or no-interest financing -- has created an overabundance of used cars. That gives the used-car shopper a lot of choice.

The flooded market also means depressed prices on used cars -- bad news for new-car buyers trading in their old models, but good news for bargain-hunting used-car shoppers.

Furthermore, an increasing number of certified pre-owned car plans have cropped to provide consumers with peace of mind when it comes to buying a used car.

In the end, the decision to buy new or to buy used boils down to what you can afford and what will give you peace of mind.

Proof of insurance should be shown

For a person to receive a disability tag for his car, he has to go to the license bureau and show proof from his doctor in the form of a special piece of paper that says he is disabled, shows the doctor's name, how he is disabled and how long he will be disabled.

This I understand. But what I don't understand is that people can walk in and get their license renewed and they are not asked to show proof that they have auto insurance. People should not be behind the wheel if they don't have auto insurance. This is not right for people who are paying for their insurance.

Making mandatory insurance mandatory

THE ISSUE: The state's auto liability insurance law has a loophole that allows people to drive without insurance and get away with it.

Since Alabama's mandatory auto liability insurance law went into effect a few years ago, the number of uninsured drivers in the state has stayed about the same. There's something wrong with a "mandatory" system that allows so many uninsured drivers.

About one in four Alabama drivers is driving without the required insurance. Some of these men and women are simply too cheap, but every driver who refuses to buy insurance is irresponsible and shouldn't be allowed behind the wheel of a vehicle. Driving without insurance isn't only dangerous and careless for the driver and his passengers; it's also dangerous to others on the roadways who are protecting themselves with insurance.

Community news roundup for Palm Beach County

Kolter Communities' effort to turn the Boca Raton Executive Golf Course into a residential development has hit a roadblock, with some angry neighbors promising to stop the project.

A lawyer for the developers has asked the city for help. Mitchell Kirschner wrote the City Council and City Manager Leif Ahnell asking them to clarify the city's position on buying the property and turning it into a park.

"Certainly, it is the prerogative of those few residents to have their own opinions; however, it should not be their prerogative to have their own facts," Kirschner wrote.

The council asked Ahnell to let the neighbors know that the city has no plans to buy the golf course.

Health care: A universal need with a universal answer

The Register stands on the correct side of health-care reform in its March 5 editorial dismissing individual mandates and continuing to embrace national single-payer health insurance ("Mandating Private Health Insurance is Misguided"). Growing numbers of Iowans and Americans get it. A recent CBS/New York Times poll found 64 percent agreed government should guarantee insurance to all and 60 percent said they were willing to pay more taxes if necessary.

But what to make of the related March 5 op-ed in which state Sen. Jack Hatch cheerleads for Mitt Romney's mandated health-care hoax ("Should Iowa Require All Residents To Have Health Insurance? It's Like Mandating Auto Insurance")?

To avoid penalizing workers, small employers and further fragmenting the insurance pool, any mandate would necessitate massive public subsidy and oversight, a health-insurance boondoggle.

It best explains the prince/pauper, rags/riches, gluttonous/ravenous delight of this game.

Oregon is Nike's pet school, the alma mater of Nike founder Phil Knight. It's the school that America's richest shoe company assists with marketing and uses as a guinea pig for cool new products. It's the school that Knight gave $40 million for football-stadium renovations.

New York Supreme Court Upholds Recognition of Out-of-State ...

NEW YORK, March 14, 2007 (LifeSiteNews.com) - The New York Supreme Court ruled yesterday to uphold a county officials recognition of same-sex marriages performed out of state. Westchester County Executive Andrew Spano announced in June of last year that same-sex couples would be granted legal privileges previously reserved for heterosexual marriage partners. Supreme Court Justice Joan Lefkowitz said Spanos executive order to recognize homosexual marriages did not violate the state Constitution and did not conflict with the states high court ruling last year that banned gay marriages from taking place in the state. It is clear that there has been change in this state concerning the rights of same-sex persons, Justice Lefkowitz said, referring to recent court rulings granting homosexual couples adoption and inheritance rights, The Journal News reported March 13.

Good casting is true present in entertaining `Ultimate Gift'

If you ever wonder why we still call them ``movie stars,'' look no further than The Ultimate Gift. It's a parable, a slight movie about a poor rich boy who has to learn the meaning of work, thrift, selflessness and faith from his richer-and-deader-than-Midas grandfather. Casting the right dead grandfather and ``names'' in some supporting roles never paid off better.

This latest and most entertaining offering from Fox Faith, the religious-themed arm of 20th Century Fox, has James Garner as the charming old man whom his greedy, mean-spirited relatives watch on video as he tells them what he's willed to them.

Bill Cobbs (Night at the Museum) is the crotchety old attorney presiding over this will reading. Lee Meriwether (Barnaby Jones) is his longtime assistant.

And after grandpa's dispensed with his other heirs, he gets around to announcing a series of tests for his estranged, spendthrift grandson, Jason (Drew Fuller), all leading up to The Ultimate Gift.

More Memories Of Northgate Mall

I enjoyed reading John Shearer's article concerning the history of Northgate Mall. I want to add my list of stores that were not mentioned.

The Leader was the place to shop during the "preppy" heydays of the mid to late 1980's. The Leader, owned by Herb and Ival Goldstein, also had locations downtown, Brainerd Village, and Belle Meade in Nashville. At Northgate, it was located toward Sears in the old G.C. Murphy location. The last location of The Leader was at Hamilton Place, downstairs close to Sears. The Leader closed all locations by 1988.

Craft Castle was located in the exterior of the mall, close to where Applebee's is today. Craft Castle was a predecessor of Michael's and Hobby Lobby. It was a small store, probably about the size of one department of the big box craft shops.

Power couple manages jobs, kids

Fifty years ago, the typical family consisted of a full-time working dad and a stay-at-home mom. Today, less than 3 percent of the population fits that mold.

June Cleaver was the great American mom. She cooked, cleaned and cared for her family. Now, fast forward fifty years. The challenge of balancing family life and successful careers in a 24-7 world can be difficult, but one couple is making it work. With three kids, two jobs and a home in the suburbs, Alison and Craig Lumbatis are a power couple with their hands full.

"Everybody get up in the morning, throw the kids out the door, both go to work at our jobs, our careers, and then come back, put the kids in bed and do it all over again," Craig said.

Both Alison and Craig were raised by stay-at-home moms. Craig thought his wife would stay home, too, but Alison learned an important lesson from her mom.

Can old rockers share the wealth?

To some, heritage rock acts like Rod Stewart, Paul McCartney and the Rolling Stones are the saviors of the touring industry. They are the cornerstones of the live-music economy because of their appeal to the mammoth and powerful boomer population, lazy record executives and radio programmers out for the easy sell. These acts pack arenas consistently with above-average ticket prices, and they annually top the year- end grosses as the most successful and powerful artists to hit the road.

But others see these rockers as part of a greater problem, one that threatens the very foundation of rock 'n' roll. If you're shelling out $29.50-$95 .

Eddie Griffin, You're An Idiot

The Enzo Ferrari is a car that explains itself with it's price tag. Sold at over $1.5 million, there were only 400 produced in 2003 and you had to be approved by Ferrari to own one. And yesterday, Eddie Griffin proved that celebrity drivers should be approved by Ferrari as well. As the video shows, Griffin was practicing for a charity event at Irwindale Speedway in Daniel Sadek's Enzo Ferrari. Sadek, who would later refer to the Ferrari as his "dream car", is the executive producer of the new movie Redline. He brought several of his own personal cars out for the race, and unfortunately gave Eddie Griffin the keys.Girffin slammed the car into a barricade and completely destroyed it. Enzo Ferrari's just simply don't head to the repair shop. The car is done for.But the good news is Griffin is OK.

Retiring detective's advice for community: 'Raise your kids'

Doyle Burke was a street cop fresh out of the Dayton police academy in 1978 and working the midnight shift when he first saw homicide detectives in action.

"We had a lot of homicides on the midnight shift — still do. The uniform officers would get little or no cooperation (from witnesses). But as soon as the homicide guys came in, they took charge and nobody challenged them. If somebody refused to talk, they'd say, 'OK, he's the first guy to go in for questioning.' I thought, 'OK, that's me. I want to be there.'?"

The future of the automobile

Fortune's Alex Taylor III sat down with Bangle after the Geneva show to find out what the future of the automobile will look like.

How will environmental concerns influence the car designs of the future?

At the most fundamental level, sustainability is just a new problem to solve. I've lived under this before, whether it was the need to strengthen bumpers in the 70s, or improve aerodynamics in the '80s, or deal with pedestrian safety regulations today.

For the most part, sustainability will be solved in ways that don't show up in the car design itself. It will be subtle under-the-skin differences in engines, and drivetrains, and technology.

But if we believe that cars reflect their owner's personalities, then what we are seeing here is a shift in the value system for customers where they want to reflect these responsibilities.

Experts urge tilt to Inland jobs

Inland business, education and work force development officials say the goal of those preparing the region's youths for careers should be to steer them toward occupations that will be prominent here, rather than training them to commute to Southern California's coastal counties.

Mike Gallo, president of Kelly Space & Technology Inc., said that collaboration among the various interested sectors will see a trained-for-local-industries work force as one of the most immediate tangible benefits.

Gallo and other participants at a Riverside conference on work force and economic development Thursday said that businesses want to move to a location with a work force they can use already in place, rather than relocate and then train the existing work force to meet their needs.

S. Korea's overseas direct investment barely rises in Q1

SEOUL, April 27 (Yonhap) -- Overseas direct investment by South Korean companies and individuals barely rose in the first three months of the year from a year earlier as investments in retail, telecommunications and the mining industry fell, a government report showed Friday.

The nation's overseas investment was tallied at US$3.84 billion in the first quarter, up 0.4 percent from $3.83 billion a year earlier, according to the report by the Ministry of Finance and Economy.

The pace of year-on-year growth was slow due to lower investment in real estate, mining and telecommunications, the report showed. South Koreans invested relatively less in those industries this year after putting in lump-sum money in the same period last year.

South Korean investment in foreign real estate dropped 21.3 percent to $480 million, while that in telecommunications plunged 97.3 percent to $10 million.

Advantage Floyd As Performance Cars Open Their Season

Holden hero Peter Floyd came out fighting with the fastest practice time when the Australian Performance Car Championship opened its 2007 season at Wakefield Park circuit, near Goulburn, today.

Floyd, the 2005 champion, topped the timesheets after two practice sessions in his Holden HSV GTS, his margin of 0.69 seconds to second place suggesting he has adapted sooner to the introduction of a new Pirelli control tyre.

Much of the field of production-based performance touring cars experienced the tyres for the first time only today and times are expected to tumble when drivers return to the track tomorrow for qualifying and then two races on Sunday at the Fujitsu V8 Supercar event.

Three Mitsubishi Lancer Evo 8 drivers, Mark King, Gary Young and Graham Alexander, came in behind Floyd.

Don't Worry, Be Happy. Or

How many of you recall your very first semester at MIT? I'm sure you can't forget it; you know, that one time long ago when you put minimal effort into your classes and ended up passing with that obscure letter P. Man, wasn't pass/no record great? My young self thought naively at the time, "This place isn't all that bad. MIT is a pretty darn fun place. People shouldn't be complaining so much. All this complaining just coalesces into a negative stereotype of this place." That is, to outsiders all we do is work and work. Yeah right … I laughed, and laughed some more when thinking about the truth. Then that fateful day came: second semester started.

Maybe I would be exaggerating just a little bit if I said reality came crashing down on me. I mean, I knew I would have to work when I made the decision to go to college.

A year after Plan B change, access still hit-or-miss

WASHINGTON - When the Food and Drug Administration allowed the so-called "morning-after pill" to be sold over the counter last year, reproductive rights advocates felt they'd cleared a major hurdle in eliminating delays that diminish the drug's effectiveness.

But nearly a year after the emergency contraceptive Plan B became easier to purchase, obtaining it without a prescription remains a hit-or-miss proposition for some women.

Inconsistent or confusing state laws and store policies, along with some pharmacists who won't dispense it for religious reasons, are complicating and sometimes blocking access to the drug.

FDA restrictions on how the drug is sold without a prescription are contributing to the problem, experts said. The agency requires Plan B to be stored behind the pharmacy counter rather than on store shelves, and buyers must be at least 18 years old and must prove it with government identification.

Attorney General files suit against insurance companies

The four companies listed in the suit, American Heritage Life Insurance Company, Protective Life Insurance Company, Old United Life Insurance Company and Resource Life Insurance Company, have been accused of defrauding customers who purchased "credit insurance." The insurance was supposed to cover the purchaser for the duration of that person's auto loans. If the insured incurred disability or died during the loan period, the insurance would pay off the balance of the auto loan. The companies listed promised to return the unearned premiums if the consumer paid off their car loan early as required by the Texas Insurance Code.

The lawsuit seeks to refund money to approximately 27,000 Texas residents who purchased the insurance. If approved, the consumers affected would get back an average of $222 plus interest.

Used car imports slump 15pc

A scarcity of good-value used car imports and a fierce new car market have pushed second-hand imports for February down 15 per cent on the same period last year.

Figures issued by Land Transport New Zealand show that the monthly imports of used cars have dropped nearly 25 per cent since 2004, with last year's comparison the most stark.

Year-to-date used imports decreased by 3469 vehicles between 2006 and 2007, a bigger drop than the previous two years combined.

New cars continue to attract buyers as distributors sharpen their marketing.

New car imports for January and February were up 2.6 per cent on 2006 and 15 per cent on 2004. Motor Industry Association chief executive Perry Kerr said February sales of new cars had been the second-highest in a month since 1990.

Zurich's Farmers Group to Buy US Auto Insurer Bristol West

Swiss insurer Zurich Financial Services AG said Friday that an American subsidiary intends to buy Bristol West Holdings Inc. for around $712 million, helping to beef up the Swiss insurer's U.S. operations.

Bristol West, an auto insurer based in Davie, Fla., confirmed that it had agreed to be acquired by the Zurich Financial's wholly owned subsidiary Farmers Group Inc., which offers a range of insurance and other products. The cash offer to Bristol West shareholders works out to $22.50 a share.

As part of the transaction, Farmers will immediately sell the underlying insurance business to the Farmers Exchanges, which Farmers Group manages but doesn't own.

"Adding Bristol's auto insurance business to the Farmers platform is a great fit and contributes to increase our outreach,'' said Farmer Group Chief Executive Paul Hopkins.

New priest compensation plan to take effect July 1

BRIGHTON -- The Archdiocese of Boston will increase priest stipends on July 1 in an effort to compensate for higher living expenses and defray the cost of Social Security. The goal of the new policy is to be fair and just for all priests, according to Father Robert Connors, chair of the Stipend Committee.

The benefits package for archdiocesan priests was recently approved by Cardinal Sen P. OMalley after two consultations with the Presbyteral Council. The policy is usually reviewed about every three years but has not been changed since 2003, except for annual cost of living increases of 3 percent.

Father Arthur M. Coyle, secretary for pastoral and ministerial services, laid out the two primary reasons for the increase in a letter to the priests of the archdiocese.

NORTH AURORA -- One of life's most frustrating -- and expensive -- propositions is getting your car to the shop for regular maintenance. Or worse -- getting your car repaired.
But a new company says beleaguered motorists no longer need rely on the phone book or an Internet search to determine which shop will give them the best price and most responsive service.
Ianauto.com (International Automotive Network+auto) has arrangements with professional mechanics who provide online estimates for needed repairs in just a few minutes, says Drew Turnbaugh, president.
He says he dreamed up the concept a few years ago. Last year, with the help of a silent partner, Turnbaugh got financial backing from business developers and rolled out Ian Auto.
Turnbaugh left his previous job, staffing and training of people for the mortgage industry, in order to devote more time to his company, based in North Aurora.
