S. Korea's overseas direct investment barely rises in Q1

SEOUL, April 27 (Yonhap) -- Overseas direct investment by South Korean companies and individuals barely rose in the first three months of the year from a year earlier as investments in retail, telecommunications and the mining industry fell, a government report showed Friday.

The nation's overseas investment was tallied at US$3.84 billion in the first quarter, up 0.4 percent from $3.83 billion a year earlier, according to the report by the Ministry of Finance and Economy.

The pace of year-on-year growth was slow due to lower investment in real estate, mining and telecommunications, the report showed. South Koreans invested relatively less in those industries this year after putting in lump-sum money in the same period last year.

South Korean investment in foreign real estate dropped 21.3 percent to $480 million, while that in telecommunications plunged 97.3 percent to $10 million.

No-fault fraud on the upswing

TALLAHASSEE — The state's no-fault insurance system is being exploited, resulting in more fraud tips and crimes than investigators can handle, the former director of the state's Division of Insurance Fraud, told a House committee Thursday.

But if lawmakers do away with the system, set to expire in October, criminals will find another way to file false claims, said Eric Miller, who recently left his post with the fraud division and is now a state Deputy Chief Financial Officer.

Advantage Floyd As Performance Cars Open Their Season

Holden hero Peter Floyd came out fighting with the fastest practice time when the Australian Performance Car Championship opened its 2007 season at Wakefield Park circuit, near Goulburn, today.

Floyd, the 2005 champion, topped the timesheets after two practice sessions in his Holden HSV GTS, his margin of 0.69 seconds to second place suggesting he has adapted sooner to the introduction of a new Pirelli control tyre.

Much of the field of production-based performance touring cars experienced the tyres for the first time only today and times are expected to tumble when drivers return to the track tomorrow for qualifying and then two races on Sunday at the Fujitsu V8 Supercar event.

Three Mitsubishi Lancer Evo 8 drivers, Mark King, Gary Young and Graham Alexander, came in behind Floyd.

Don't Worry, Be Happy. Or

How many of you recall your very first semester at MIT? I'm sure you can't forget it; you know, that one time long ago when you put minimal effort into your classes and ended up passing with that obscure letter P. Man, wasn't pass/no record great? My young self thought naively at the time, "This place isn't all that bad. MIT is a pretty darn fun place. People shouldn't be complaining so much. All this complaining just coalesces into a negative stereotype of this place." That is, to outsiders all we do is work and work. Yeah right … I laughed, and laughed some more when thinking about the truth. Then that fateful day came: second semester started.

Maybe I would be exaggerating just a little bit if I said reality came crashing down on me. I mean, I knew I would have to work when I made the decision to go to college.
