Making mandatory insurance mandatory

THE ISSUE: The state's auto liability insurance law has a loophole that allows people to drive without insurance and get away with it.

Since Alabama's mandatory auto liability insurance law went into effect a few years ago, the number of uninsured drivers in the state has stayed about the same. There's something wrong with a "mandatory" system that allows so many uninsured drivers.

About one in four Alabama drivers is driving without the required insurance. Some of these men and women are simply too cheap, but every driver who refuses to buy insurance is irresponsible and shouldn't be allowed behind the wheel of a vehicle. Driving without insurance isn't only dangerous and careless for the driver and his passengers; it's also dangerous to others on the roadways who are protecting themselves with insurance.
